Vodka is the go-to spirit of many – if you’re here, there’s a decent chance it’s yours too.

Let’s face it though: while vodka sodas might be an easy, simple way of getting your vodka fix, it isn’t exactly very exciting in terms of taste or appearance!

Thankfully, vodka is big – as in, it’s worth more than $10 billion a year!

And since it’s such a popular liquor, there are literally hundreds of different vodka drinks out there for each different taste.

Sure, you could always go for staples like a vodka raspberry or a vodka martini. In keeping with today’s theme however, we’re going to go a bit off the beaten track and highlight some less-common vodka drinks you can whip out at your next party.

1) Henley Highball

You’ll need:

  • Vodka
  • Apple cider
  • Simple syrup
  • Soda water
  • Lemon juice

Fill a shaker with ice, then pour 60ml of vodka, around 40ml of your favourite apple cider, 30ml of simple syrup and a pinch of lemon juice. Shake and strain into an ice-filled glass, and top up with soda water.

If you like, feel free to add a dash of aromatic bitters to the top or garnish it with a slice of fresh orange.

2) Blackberry Vodka Mojito

Got a bit of a sweet tooth? Tired of ordering vodka lemonade?

You’ll need:

  • Vodka
  • Basil leaves
  • Blackberries
  • Lemon-lime soft drink

Place basil leaves and blackberries in a glass and mash them (“muddling”, in bartender-speak). We recommend four of each, but don’t be afraid to mix things up if you want.

Fill the glass with ice, then add 40ml of vodka and top it up with your lemon-lime soft drink. Feel free to garnish with berries or crystallised ginger.

And that’s it!

3) Spicy Cold

Add some spice – literally – to your next party with this out-there vodka drink!

You’ll need:

  • Vodka
  • Lime juice
  • Simple syrup
  • Hot sauce

First you’ll want to prepare your glass by filling it with ice and salting the rim.

Once that’s done, use a shaker to combine 60mL of vodka with 20ml of lime juice and simple syrup, before adding in two dashes of hot sauce (plus or minus depending on how much spice you can handle).

Pour into your glass and garnish with cucumber slices and you’re good to go.

Summer refreshing drink. Gin tonic with mint leaves and blackberries. On a white wooden table.

4) Sophia Loren

No, we aren’t talking about the famed Italian actress!

You’ll need:

Ina shaker with ice, pour 30ml of vodka, 20ml of grapefruit juice and 15ml of Campari and simple syrup. Strain into a martini glass and top it up with champagne (don’t worry, other types of bubbly will do, too!)

Top everything off with your choice of garnish (we suggest a grapefruit peel, in keeping with the theme!)

Vodka: not just for drinking!

“To alcohol! The cause of – and solution to – all of life’s problems.”

– Homer J. Simpson

While he may have gotten a lot of things wrong over the last 30 years, the animated funnyman was definitely on the money with this quote here.

Specifically, in the sense that alcohol (and vodka in particular) has applications outside of just drinking!

A greenthumb’s best friend

Pour some vodka into a spray bottle and then water it down. Spray directly onto the weeds in question and wait – within a few hours, the weeds should dry out and shrivel up.

How much water is up to you, though higher concentrations tend to have a stronger effect than highly-diluted mixtures.

“Why does it taste like medicine?!”

The medicine comparison is common in people who are trying spirits for the first time.

What you mightn’t have known, however is that many spirits were originally created as just that!

In particular, vodka is a powerful sanitiser. With such high alcohol content, vodka is the perfect impromptu disinfectant.

On top of that, it can potentially:

3) Vodka: your secret weapon for removing stickers

Fed up with stubborn stickers? Vodka is very good at dissolving adhesive.

When you apply vodka to a sticker, it soaks into the sticker and breaks down the bonds that holds a sticker in place.
